Short Notes On Cyclones

02:59
Cyclones
cyclone, atmospheric
pressure distribution in which there is a low central pressure relative to the
surrounding pressure. The resulting pressure gradient, combined with the
Coriolis effect, causes air to circulate about the core of lowest pressure in a
counter clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere and in a clockwise
direction in the Southern Hemisphere. Near the surface of the earth, the
frictional drag on the air moving over land or water causes it to spiral
gradually inward toward lower pressures. This inward movement of air is
compensated for by rising currents near the center, which are cooled by
expansion when they reach the lower pressures of higher altitudes. The cooling,
in turn, greatly increases the relative humidity of the air, so that
“lows” are generally characterized by cloudiness and high humidity;
they are thus often referred to simply as storms.

Temperate Cyclones

Temperate cyclones are
atmospheric disturbances having low pressure in the centre and increasing
pressure outward. The origin and influence of these cyclones is in the
temperate zone due to which they are known as temperate cyclones. They are more
active in winter in the Northern hemisphere but due to prominence of water
areas in the Southern hemisphere, they are active throughout the year, since,
they travel from West to East they are also termed as Western disturbances.

Life Cycle of a Temperature Cyclone
There are six stages of
life cycle of a temperate cyclone.

First Stage
involves the convergence of two ari masses of contrasting physical properties
and directions. Initially, the air masses (warm and cold) move parallel to each
other and a stationary front is formed. This is called initial stage.

Second Stage
is also called as incipient stage, during which the warm and cold air masses
penetrate into the territories of each other and thus a wave-like front is formed.

Third Stage
is the mature stage when the cyclone is fully developed  and isobars become almost circular.

Fourth Stage
warm sector is narrowed in extent due to the advancement of cold front than
warm, as cold front comes nearer to warm front.

Fifth Stage
starts with the occlusion of cyclone when the advancing cold front finally
overtakes the warm front and an occluded front is formed.

Sixth Stage
warm sector completely disappears, occluded front is eliminated and ultimately
cyclone dies out.
Tropical Cyclones
Cyclones developed in the
regions lying between the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer are called tropical
cyclones. All types of cyclones originate because of frontogenesis. Inspite of
the absence of two contrasting air masses in the equatorial region fronts are
formed due to meeting of land and sea winds. This frontal concept of the origin
of tropical cyclone is no longer acceptable because tropical cyclones in no
case are related to fronts.

They are characterized by the following salient
features-:
-Tropical cyclones move at
the speed of about 32 km per hour while hurricanes attain the velocity of 180
km per hour or more.
-On an average, their
diameters range between 80 km and 300 km but some time they become so small
their diameter I restricted to 50 km or even less.
-Like temperate cyclones,
tropical are not characterized temperature variation in their different parts because they do not have different front.

-Generally, direction is
Westerly up to 15° latitude from the equator, pole–ward between 15° to 60°
latitudes, and again Westerly. These cyclones are weaker when they enter
sub-tropical regions.
-Tropical cyclones become
disastrous natural hazards because of their high wind speed of 180 km to 400 km
per hour, high tidal surges-high rainfall intensity, very low atmospheric
pressure.

GATEWAY TO SSC CGL : GEOGRAPHY STUDY NOTES

Earth Latitude and Longitude
Earth Latitude
• Imaginary lines drawn parallel to the equator. Measured as an angle whose apex is at the centre of the earth.
• The equator represents 0° latitude, while the North Pole is 90° N and the South Pole 90° S

• 23½° N represents Tropic of Cancer while 23½° S represents Tropic of Capricorn.
• 66½° N represents Arctic Circle while 66½° S represents Antarctic Circle.
• There are total 181 latitudes including the equator. Each parallel of latitude is a circle, but they are not equal.
• The circle becomes smaller towards the poles. Equator is the ‘Greatest Circle’ that can be drawn on the earth’s surface.
• The distance between any two parallels of latitude is always equal.
1 degree lat. = 111km.

Earth Longitude
• It is the angular distance measured from die centre of the earth. On the globe the lines of longitude are drawn as a series of semicircles that extend from the North Pole to the South Pole through the equator. They are also called meridians.
• The distance between any two meridians is not equal.
At the equator, 1 degree = 111 km.  At 30°N or S, it is 96.5 km.  It goes on decreasing this way until it is zero at the poles.
• There are 360 meridians of longitude. The prime meridian is a longitude of 00, passing through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich near London.
• This meridian is taken by geographers to divide the earth into the eastern and the western hemispheres.
• Each meridian of longitude is a semi-circle. 180° meridian (International Date Line) lies exactly opposite to 0° meridian. Such points are called Antipodal Points.
• The earth is divided into 24 longitudinal zones, each being 15° or 1 hour apart in time (4 minutes / degree).

Longitude and Time
• Places that are on the same meridian have the same local (sun) time. Since the earth makes one complete revolution of 360° in 24 hours, it passes through 15° in one hour or 1° in 4 minutes.
• The earth rotates from west to east, hence places east of Greenwich see the sun earlier and gain time whereas places west of Greenwich see the sun later and lose time.
• India, whose longitudinal extent is approx. 30°, has adopted only one time zone, selecting the 82.5°E for the standard time which is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
International Date Line
• It is the 180° meridian running over the Pacific Ocean, deviating at Aleutian Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Gilbert Islands. It is a zig-zag line
• Travelers crossing the Date Line from west to east (i.e., from Japan to USA) repeat a day and travelers crossing it from east to west (i.e., from USA to Japan) lose a day.
Important Parallels of Latitude
1. The Tropic of Cancer : It is in the northern hemisphere at an angular distance of 23 1/2° (23°30’N) from the equator.
2. The Tropic of Capricorn : It is in the southern hemisphere at an angular distance of 23 1/2° (23°30’S) from the equator.
3. The Arctic Circle : It lies at a distance of 66 1/2° (66°30’N) north of the equator.
4. The Antarctic Circle : It lies at a distance of 66 1/2° (66°30’S) south of the equator. There are two solstices each year, called the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice.
Summer Solstice : The day of 21st June when the sun is vertically overhead at the Tropic of Cancer (23°30’N).
Winter Solstice : The day of 22nd December when the sun is vertically overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn (23°30’S).

Meridians of Longitude
The semi-circles running from pole to pole or from north to south are known as meridians of longitude and distance between them is measured in degrees of longitude. Greenwich Meridian or Prime Meridian with a value of 0° longitude serves as a common base for numbering meridians of longitude lying on either side of it — east as well as west. There are 360 meridians including Prime Meridian. Each degree of a longitude is divided into sixty equal parts, each part is called a minute. Each minute is again divided into sixty equal parts, each part being called a second.
Local Time : Local time of any place is 12 noon when the sun is exactly overhead. It will vary from the Greenwich time at the rate of four minutes for each degree of longitude.
Greenwich Mean Time : The time at 0° longitude is called Greenwich Mean Time. It is based on local time of the meridian passing through Greenwich near London.
Indian Standard Time : It is fixed on the mean of 82 1/2°E Meridian, a place near Allahabad. It is 5 1/2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

Climate of India and Factors Affecting the Climate of India
Weather refers to the state of the atmosphere over an area at any given period of time. Weather can change throughout the day whereas the climate of a country is the same for many years. The climate of a country depends upon several factors such as location, size, altitude, wind, distance from the sea, the alignment of hills and mountains etc.

The Climate of India: /
The whole of India has a tropical monsoonal climate, since the greater part of the country lies within the trophies, and the climate is influenced by the monsoons. The position of the mountain ranges and direction of the rain-bearing winds are the two main factors that determine the climate of India. Alternating seasons is the chief characteristic of India's Climate.

Factors Affecting the Climate of India/

Location and Latitudinal Extent: /
-The mainland of India extends roughly from 8°N to 37°N and the Tropic of Cancer of passes through the middle of the country.
-Areas south of the Tropic of Cancer are closer to the equator and experience high temperature throughout the year, the northern parts on the other hand lie in the warm temperature zone.
-Water bodies comprising the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal surround the peninsular India and make climatic conditions mild along the coastal areas.

Distance from the Sea:/
-With a long coastline, large coastal areas have an equable climate. Areas in the interior of India are far away from the moderating influence of the sea. Such areas have extremes of climate.
-For example the annual range of temperature at Kochi does not exceed 3°C whereas it is as high at 20°C at Delhi. Similarly, the amount of annual rainfall at Kolkata is 119 cm which falls to a low of 24 cm at Bikaner.

Himalaya Mountains:/
-The Himalayas play an important role in lending a sub-tropical touch to the climate of India.
-It prevents the cold winds of north Asia from blowing into India, thus protecting it from severely cold winters. It also traps the Monsoon winds, forcing them to shed their moisture within the sub-continent.

Altitude:
-Temperature decreases with height.
-Several hill stations and the Himalayan ranges are much cooler than the places located in the Great Plain of North India.
-Places located at higher altitude have cool climate even though they are located in the peninsular India, i.e., Ooty.

Upper Air Circulation:/
-The changes in the upper air circulation over Indian landmass influence the climate of India to a great extent.
-Air currents in the upper layers of the atmosphere known as jet steams could determine the arrival of the monsoons and departure of the monsoons.

Tropical Cyclones: /
-Tropical cyclones originate in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea and the influence large parts of the peninsular India. Majority of the cyclones originate in the Bay of Bengal and influence the weather conditions during the south-west monsoon season.

Western Disturbances:
-The western disturbances originate over the Mediterranean sea and travel eastward under the influence of westerly jet stream. They influence the winter weather conditions over most of Northern plains and Western Himalayan region.

El-Nino Effect:/
-El-Nino is a narrow warm current which occasionally appears off the coast of Peru in December.
-Sometimes it becomes more intense and increases the surface water temperatures of the sea by 10°C.
-This warming of tropical Pacific waters affects the monsoon winds in the Indian Ocean.

La Nina:/
-La Nina in effect is the complete opposition of El Nino.
-In India the presence of La Nina portends exceptionally good news, it is the harbinger of heavy monsoon showers in India.

Southern Oscillation:/
-The interrelation of high and low pressure over the Pacific and the Indian Ocean is called Southern Oscillation.
-When the winter pressure is high over the Pacific Ocean and low over the Indian Ocean, the south-west monsoons in India tend to be stronger. In the reverse case, the monsoons are most likely to be weaker.
